Foundation, Tradition, and Experience

Every firm traces its history to a critical event.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Frank D. Merchant saw the potential existing in the field of patent and trademark law and established a family-owned firm that has grown to become synonymous with the words integrity, wisdom and innovation. Attorney John D. Gould joined Frank's two sons, Harvey and Ralph Merchant, in 1954 on a two month trial basis. He remains with the firm to this day. Under Mr. Gould's, and more recently under Managing Director Randy King's leadership, M&G has grown to become one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the United States.
Innovation, Ventures, and Growth

Through conferencing technology and collaboration tools, attorneys from all eight of our U.S. offices are able to work closely with one another and with clients regardless of where they are physically located. Collaborating in this way fosters innovative approaches and timely, cost-effective solutions to IP problems. It also puts the entire scope of our resources and the professional expertise of individual lawyers in various locations at each client's disposal.

Since the mid-1990s, the firm's leadership has ventured into new industries and technologies including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, polymers, chemical products, medical devices, computers and the Internet — aggressively pursuing growth in all areas. Merchant & Gould has continued to expand its global reach as well with 400 of the 1000 patents we handled in 1998 issued to international clients.
