Job Description:
Wireless Generation is building a next generation data store and web service infrastructure that will empower a new ecosystem of innovative, data-driven, education-focused applications. We seek a Technical Writer to write internal and end-user documentation that engages educators, gives developers the information to build and understand complex data and web service-driven systems, and provides IT professionals the necessary context to integrate with and develop against those systems.
Responsibilities of the Technical Writer:
- Writing end-user documentation that engages educators and answers their questions about system usage
- Writing, formatting, and editing user materials, technical documentation, and Wiki pages to promote clarity, accuracy, and Wireless Generation style
- Developing functional specification documentation
- Creating API documentation and data dictionaries
- Creating and editing graphics using screen capture utilities and Adobe Photoshop or similar tools
- Generating help builds and working with developers and quality assurance to ensure correct, proper integration
- Managing each documents or help projects lifecycle with efficiency and accuracy, maintaining and updating multiple branches as necessary
Requirements of the Technical Writer:
- Four-year degree with concentration in Computer Science, Journalism, Communications, or English followed by at least 2 years developing technical and end-user documentation (candidates are expected to provide samples and complete a writing test)
- Experience documenting developer and/or IT-facing materials, including data dictionaries, API specifications, and technical How-To guides
- Experience working with source code documentation tools, such as Javadoc and Sphinx, as well as a rudimentary ability to read and understand source code in languages such as Java, C#, and/or Python
- Experience with help development kits, publication management tools, and wiki technologies a must; experience with HTML programming a plus
- Meticulous attention to detail, commitment to producing quality products, and the ability to set and meet tight deadlines
- Excellent organizational skills along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
- An understanding of the challenges teachers face as new technology is deployed in the classroom is a plus
