Managing partner Ralph J. Gillis founded the Firm in 1981, with offices initially located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In 1983 the Firm relocated to Hingham, Massachusetts, which brought it closer to Boston, facilitating service for the Firm’s expanding national and international practice areas. The Firm’s focus on public and private international law and transactions, natural resources, energy law and fisheries continued to develop. In 1999 Philip Barthel joined the Firm, adding to the firm’s general practice footprint including general business formation and corporate law, estate planning, and commercial as well as residential real estate matters.

In 2013 the Firm entered a new round of expansion, heralded by the refreshed Gillis, Borchardt & Barthel, LLP name. Joining managing partner, Ralph J. Gillis, are named partners Charles Borchardt and Philip Barthel, together with associate Ralph “RB” Gillis.
