Case Study Summary new

We are one of several City law firms providing a rota of qualified volunteer lawyers, known as Honorary Legal Advisers, to work alongside the Royal Courts of Justice Advice Bureau's staff and advisers. Together we help around 2,500 people every year....

Description:

The Citizens Advice Bureau at the Royal Courts of Justice (RCJ) offers free legal advice and practical support to the RCJ's litigants. It aims to equip each litigant with a full understanding of their rights and responsibilities and an awareness of the services available to them. As well as helping individuals to cope with the stress of a court appearance, the RCJ Advice Bureau increases the likelihood of their cases reaching a satisfactory conclusion.

Our volunteers come from the firm's Dispute Resolution group. Their commitment is underpinned by annual donations to the Bureau and the involvement of partner Sarah Lee as one of its trustees. Volunteer support is also drawn from our Costs department, which helps litigants, on an ad hoc basis, to resolve cost awards issues.

"Many people talk about 'access to justice' but Slaughter and May really helps to make that happen for litigants in person every week at the RCJ Advice Bureau"

James Banks, Chief Executive of the RCJ Advice Bureau
